On Monday we experienced a storm like I have never experienced before. If you had asked me what a Derecho was I would have thought it was some kind of food. It was like an inland hurricane with winds in excess of 100 miles per hour hitting a large swath of central Iowa. Farmers have lost all of their crops. Many in the state have lost their homes, or they are facing extensive repairs with downed trees and power lines. Losses will be in the billions. Still today, 4 days after the storm, there are 170,000 people in the state without electricity and it may be days before it is restored. Some of our surrounding communities are just starting to get power back. No power means no gas, no gas to run the chain saws and generators needed to begin the slow process of clean up. Our town utility company has a generator, so we were only without power for a few minutes, so we are thankful for that. But it’s been bittersweet as our very small community has felt the pain of two deaths related to the storm. Schools are supposed to be starting in a couple weeks. Our school facility is okay. Many other communities will have delay the start of school indefinitely because of damaged buildings. If you are planning any trips to your favorite quilts stores in Iowa this weekend, call ahead to make sure they are open. Also ask about the availability of gas and restaurants. Because we’ve maintained power, there have been long lines and shortages at our local gas stations with people coming in from outside the area to fill up. A special thanks to all our first responders and utility workers who have done an amazing job but still have a long job ahead of them.
